Don’t Build a Business That Pays $1.50/hr

There is something that bugs me a lot…

It’s a new trend that steals fathers away from their families.
It’s the lifestyle side hustle.

I’m all about building a business to provide for your family.
But to me, it’s more than just delivering a pay-check.

It’s about becoming a Present Provider.

Yet, I observe so many fathers stepping into the world of business with a side hustle mentality.

The goal is to make a little extra money on the side.
The idea is often a little extra on cash by making some passive income.

But when we calculate the time and the money, we’d often see a real number of $1.50 per hour.

That makes you an Absent Provider, not a Present Provider.

Sadly, most won’t even notice this.

They keep on building.
This number of reduced income per hour is a hard pill to swallow.

How do I know that?
Because my effective pay in 2023 was $0.60.
I have had a pay-per-hour from my sessions of 60 cents per hour.

I learned through failure.
Struggling to make money.

The only difference is that:
I planned for bigger things.

I set bigger goals.
And so I had to pay to learn.

You can either do it with time and fail your way there—
or pay for coaching to get there faster.

The bigger goal is to quit your job or reduce your hours in your business.

That’s why I don’t blame the Absent Provider.
It’s on the path to the Present Provider.

It’s just important not to get stuck being an Absent Provider.

I see this every day online. People struggling to get a client. Struggling to make money. I have been there before. Aiming to reach a monthly income, ready for the harvest — and then coming up empty. No income. No clients. Just crickets. I thought I had good product. But in reality, I was more focused on what I would get out than what I gave. I didn’t actually sow any seeds. I was preparing for the harvest— only to wonder why it never came. That was a hard lesson. I still remember how…

  • Strive for Excellence not Perfection

Strive for Excellence not Perfection How often do we freeze up and can’t go forward, because something we have created isn’t good enough – isn’t perfect? Way too often. I have spent so many hours trying to perfect something. Our goal is often completion, or perfection. Reaching the 100%. It seems like it is always escaping us. I want to challenge the idea of perfection. We should strive for excellence. Doing something not for 100% perfection, but rather to a 90% excellence. Perfection keeps…

  • Build With Leverage, Not Burnout

There is a limit to the work we can do. We all have 24 hours in a day. We might have a different energy level to start, but in the evening, our energy will be spent. The only way to do more is by building with leverage. It used to be that we needed to lift the heavy stones by hand. Then they developed the crane. Now one person could pull the rope and pull up the rock alone. We can have multiple levers. When I was younger, I rode my bike everywhere to school. There was a limit to how fast I…

  • Working with Constraints

Working with Constraints Everybody has constraints. We usually try to ignore them. We try to show all the good things and advantages we have. But we don’t want to share limitations we have. Constraints are a powerful opportunity once you use them right. There is a saying that goes something like this: “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.” The opportunities we have right now seem endless. You think you can conquer the world. Once reality hits, you realize – that you’re still…

  • The Forestry Lesson That Changed How I Build

We are often in a rush.I’m definitely feeling it on many days. I think my progress is to slow.My plan is always tight for time.I plan too much for too little time. Then I need to look up, let in a sense of time. In forestry, there is a saying:“Wood grows on wood.”Older trees grow more wood per year than smaller trees — if both grow slow. The bigger, older tree will have added a multiple amount of wood compared to the smaller, younger tree because its diameter is so much bigger.Yet the small…

  • Clock Building, Not Time Telling

All fathers I know want to leave their kids better off. They think about the legacy they leave behind. Many of those fathers think about starting a business. That’s what I also started out with. To this day I think the best way to start a business is with a service — something that you can coach or build for your clients. There is only one detail: This is all skill-based. You need to learn the skills. That is also why service is a good place to start. The hidden danger is that you become a…
