Good Decisions vs. Good Outcomes

Hey Reader,

Just because you won something doesn’t mean that it was a good decision to participate.

Sometimes in life, it feels like we were just lucky—that we were in the right place at the right time.

We observe this in the lives of others as well.

Some people around you just seem like they got lucky, were gifted.

When we are starting a business, it feels daunting. It feels like we have to be lucky.

The more years I spend in the entrepreneurial world, the more I see two components to success:

  1. Decisions
  2. Outcomes

The decision creates one input. The output we wait for is reflected in the outcome.

In the tech world, there is the saying: Garbage in, garbage out.

While I generally agree with this, it doesn’t quite capture the whole part.

There is a lottery winner.

They win a lot of money once.

This is a great outcome.

The issue is that they can’t replicate success.

So the great outcome is there, but it’s achieved by random chance.

This is the case when sometimes garbage in leads to gold out.

That doesn’t mean that a bad decision can’t still lead to a good outcome.

When we’re starting a business, we should focus on making good decisions.

It is true that a good decision might not lead to a good outcome in the first try.

But try it often enough and the winner effect will be there.

Good decisions will create good outcomes that are repeatable.

Don’t be discouraged when you make a good decision and it leads to a bad outcome.

Do it again.

Don’t start making bad Decisions in the Hope of getting a good Outcome.

I’m in it with you, my friend!

Hey Reader, I can’t hear it anymore. Going viral has started to become a red flag for me. Everybody is waiting to go viral.Yet it’s not worth that much. What happens when you go viral? You become known for that one thing. Most people that go viral only end up as one-hit wonders. Going viral also means that you’ll be shown to many new people— people that won’t fit your dream clients. You’ll have to deal with: Many less comments More noise People who just want to get your attention If you’re not…

  • Follow your passion or not?

Hey Reader, The advice to follow your passion has been talked about for many years. Recently, everybody started to talk about Ikigai. It’s a Japanese concept with four sections. The idea is to help you narrow down what you should do. It evaluates whether you’re good at it, whether others demand it, the market, and whether you have passion for it. All good things. There is one challenge though. On paper, it makes everything sound good. When I started out, I talked about fatherhood—because it’s…

  • We’ve got productivity backwards

The core idea behind productivity is well-meaning. It is to make our work more productive. That we are able to produce more. I think the core driver is to do a job better. We want to achieve bigger things and so we constantly seek to improve — from riding a horse to driving a carriage to driving a car is an improvement in speed and comfort. The driving question is to improve what we are doing. A farmer does a job better when he can produce more bushels per acre – more tons per hectare. A…

  • You Always Have a Choice

I just read a post from somebody complaining how bad his dream job is and how the system is responsible it’s so bad. This seems like it’s so acceptable today.Everything is responsible for you not thriving or getting where you want to go. The other day, I heard a young man say that he has issues with girls because of his mother. When we don’t have one person to blame, it’s so easy to just blame the system. In my humble opinion, those are weak excuses. You make everyone and everything around…

  • Why More Leads Might Hurt You

I see this all over the internet. People talk about needing more leads, or more new clients. My DMs are full with outreach offering me more leads. The reality is that most think they need more leads, when in reality they don’t have a good enough offer. Focus to help one person better, more and effective. Then you will have something to offer that is power. Take that out into the world and you’ll see:suddenly leads become easier. More leads doesn’t automatically grow your business. When you…

  • 30 before 30

30 before 30 Now that I’m 29 years old – I’m wondering what do I want to do with my next year? What do I want to do before I turn 30? As I have been working on my business to become the Present Provider for my family – I have noticed a trend. Most people set an income goal. So have I in the last years. Now that I have a few years on my back – I realize it is better to focus on Impact. Impact over Income. It is not how much I can get out – it is how much I can give. My goal is to reach 30K…
