The End of Social Media as We Know It

How many of you remember the beginning of social media?
When Facebook was starting to see some traction?
The good old days.

I used to use Facebook to communicate with my friends.
It was like a private group chat.
We would just share silly ideas and chat.

But social media has changed.
It is not the same anymore.

Most users today use social media today are forms of entertainment and learning.

The algorithms adapted.

We should be talking of Interest Media instead.
Content creators have become full business models now.

People no longer see things from people they follow.
They see posts from Interests they love.

They also see posts from people they have interacted with.

It is no longer the private group chat and more another form to spend your time online.

You could:

  • Stream Netflix.
  • Learn on YouTube.
  • Check the newspaper.
  • Or scroll social media.

The actions and content?
Similar.

Most people are consumers of social media, not really active creators.

Where it used to be more of a collaboration, it is now a two-sided Creator/Consumer platform.

This has one upside if you’re starting a business:

Talk about things people are interested in, that are memorable and unique.

This way, you can build up your distribution
and make the most out of your Interest Media platforms.

  • Don’t Wait Until You Feel Ready

“Well, I’m not ready.”How often do I hear this from others? How often do I think it myself? Too often. The truth is: You will never feel ready. The more you learn, the more you figure out what else there is to learn. Even when I feel like I have something figured out —the world changes and I have to start over again. Every time I used to start over,I’d get faster because I got better. I also know: Everybody else needs to start over too. There’s this constant battle inside: “Just start” sounds…

  • Followers Aren’t Created Equal

I see this so often in the last years:Creators come up. Think all they need to do to make money and drive a brand is to build a big following online. There is the idea that any following is going to make you rich. Your following just needs to be big enough. But the reality is that followers aren’t created equal. I would trade 1,000 followers on Instagram for 1,000 subscribers on YouTube any day. I’d also rather have 1,000 subscribers to my newsletter than 1 million TikTok followers. This is…

  • You Need a Guide to Win Faster

When I went fishing for the first time, I was in the US.A guy from church invited me to come along with him.He packed up his boat, went to get some bait, and drove us to the lake. It was all prepared for me.It was a blast. I do admit, I got a little sunburn.Besides that, we had a good day fishing. Then I thought to myself:That wasn’t so hard. I can do it. So I got myself a fishing rod and went to a lake.I had some bait with me.My brother joined me on the trip. We were fishing hard. We caught…

  • Working with Constraints

Working with Constraints Everybody has constraints. We usually try to ignore them. We try to show all the good things and advantages we have. But we don’t want to share limitations we have. Constraints are a powerful opportunity once you use them right. There is a saying that goes something like this: “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.” The opportunities we have right now seem endless. You think you can conquer the world. Once reality hits, you realize – that you’re still…

  • Strive for Excellence not Perfection

Strive for Excellence not Perfection How often do we freeze up and can’t go forward, because something we have created isn’t good enough – isn’t perfect? Way too often. I have spent so many hours trying to perfect something. Our goal is often completion, or perfection. Reaching the 100%. It seems like it is always escaping us. I want to challenge the idea of perfection. We should strive for excellence. Doing something not for 100% perfection, but rather to a 90% excellence. Perfection keeps…

  • More knowledge is not the answer

I do like reading books. There is something about reading a book on the couch that is relaxing. It is a lot slower to read a book than to watch 10 YouTube videos in 2x speed. We live in an era of endless information. We can find an answer to every question in 1000 videos. Yet we keep looking for the golden shard to build our sensation. The one missing piece that will make the rest fall into place. I am also a knowledge junkie. I like to be informed before I take action. I have spent years…
