The No. 1 Skill for All Entrepreneurs

When I was starting out, my wife said:
“You seem to be like you’re on a rollercoaster.”

When a video I uploaded performed well — I was excited.
I was on top of the world.

Another day, I got a bad comment,
and the whole day was ruined by insecurity.

This continued day in, day out.

On extreme days, it was the top of the world in the morning, and the valley of death in the afternoon.

This brings me to the most important skill to master:

Emotional Resilience.

That you don’t take everything personal.
That not all things that happen throughout the day are emotional.

One step is to separate the business from yourself.

I know this is a hard one, because you feel like you are your business.
While your business requires 100% of you to grow
you don’t rely on your business to grow.
You are more than your business.

The next task is to:

Look for input, not for outcomes.
Focus on what you can control.

Do what you can and ignore the rest.

Analytics don’t matter much in the beginning.
It’s more about getting actually good.

In the beginning, I didn’t know what would work.
I still had to stick with it for long enough.

Know that there will be a lot of failures on the road.
That is not you.
That’s just something you tried.

You can do it new, better, again.

Emotional Resilience gives you the strength to start in adversity.
When it looks bad.

Don’t let your hope be controlled by trolls of the internet
or analytics from platforms.

Just keep going.
It’s too important for you to not keep going.

You can also find help in conversation.
You’ll be able to find encouragement there.

You are not alone.
Be ready to stand small.

  • Build With Leverage, Not Burnout

There is a limit to the work we can do. We all have 24 hours in a day. We might have a different energy level to start, but in the evening, our energy will be spent. The only way to do more is by building with leverage. It used to be that we needed to lift the heavy stones by hand. Then they developed the crane. Now one person could pull the rope and pull up the rock alone. We can have multiple levers. When I was younger, I rode my bike everywhere to school. There was a limit to how fast I…

  • Death by 1000 Cuts

Hey Reader, There is a daily battle going on. We are at war. Alone. Nobody is watching. We all know one enemy: Procrastination. It’s talked about a lot.We don’t do what we want to do. What if I tell you Procrastination is not even the biggest enemy? There is an even bigger one in the room. We are at war to defend our focus to do meaningful work, yet distractions keep interrupting our focus. Only a minute here. And a minute there. And we now say it’s procrastination giving resistance. What did we…

  • Who Not Why

Simon Sinek became known for the idea: “Start with why.” All of a sudden, we were talking about purpose. The question of why started for many the search of reason and purpose. Our why was the starting point for our mission. I love talking about why and your life’s purpose. However, I find that why is not the best place to start. When Frodo took the ring, he acted — not because of purpose, but because of position. He was already in possession of the ring, and he had to do something to help his…

  • Clock Building, Not Time Telling

All fathers I know want to leave their kids better off. They think about the legacy they leave behind. Many of those fathers think about starting a business. That’s what I also started out with. To this day I think the best way to start a business is with a service — something that you can coach or build for your clients. There is only one detail: This is all skill-based. You need to learn the skills. That is also why service is a good place to start. The hidden danger is that you become a…

  • Quality vs. Quantity is a lie.

Hey Reader, You’ve probably heard this before. The endless debate of Quality vs. Quantity. It’s all over the internet. The debate is that you have to choose between either or — like they are on the same coin, and you can only pick one side. This is an issue I’ve had for years. The general advice is to focus on Quality over Quantity, like Quality is more important.Yet the reality is: You can only get Quality through repetition. Repetition means Quantity.Meaning: you need to do Quantity before you…

  • Move faster forward.

Hey Reader, The number one differentiation in business is the speed of your movement. How fast you can act on any idea. This is challenging, especially when you’re just starting out. It feels like there is so much you need to learn. The reality is that business always feels a bit overwhelming because there are constantly new problems to figure out. You just learn to cope with challenges better. One big step forward is the process to learn anything quickly so that you can move forward quickly….
